Modern Restaurant Tables

Modernism in 3-D: The Ulysses Table

17th December 2007

In literature, Ulysses is the title of a highly acclaimed – and somewhat controversial, during its time at least – novel by James Joyce. It’s also the Latin name of a figure in mythology, who is known as Odysseus in Greek. In the furniture world, it’s a table. And what a lovely table it is.

helmut_jahn_and_yorgo_lykouria_ulysses_tablex.jpgThe Ulysses Table was designed by Helmut Jahn and Yorgo Lykouria and was inspired by tables that were used in refectories in monasteries of yore. But unlike those heavy slabs of wood that the monks of long ago used, this one is fully modern. The slim profile and sleek lines all scream 21st century. Well, not scream perhaps. More like a dignified statement of the present times.

The frame is of polished stainless steel. The table top, also of stainless steel but with a lasered pattern, is covered with an acrylic glass panel. This panel is clear, so the laser cut design of the steel underneath remains visible to users. The Ulysses Dining Table is manufactured by ClassiCon and comes in three length options: 240, 320, and 400 centimeters.

If your restaurant or café has ample space, then this table can be part of your café area furniture. It looks very capable of seating a large number of people who can have great conversation over their food. Of course, if they would rather be contemplative, like perhaps the old monks in their refectories, then that’s their option.

There are parallels between Joyce’s novel and the legend of Odysseus. Can the novel be related to the Ulysses Table as well? Maybe. Ulysses the book has cunning structuring and is known as one of the best examples of modernist literature. Ulysses the table obviously was carefully planned and manufactured and is a worthy example of modern furniture.
