Lunar table by Manolo Bassi: It isn’t science fiction
19th December 2007
I must admit that though I like science fiction books and movies, I haven’t read or seen too much of them. I was never a part of the huge following of films and TV shows like Star Trek, though I did very much enjoy the Star Wars movies. But for the life of me I can’t see the relationship between the Lunar Dining Table and sci-fi films.
Designed by Manolo Bossi and manufactured by spHaus, it is said that the base of the table is reminiscent of lunar landscapes seen in old science fiction movies. Maybe aficionados of such movies and literature will be able to see the resemblance, but I sure don’t. However, there is no denying that it looks to be a very attractive table indeed, lunar landscapes or not. It is an indoor table that would look good as contract bar furniture because of its modern, clean appearance.
The base is constructed from folded and painted aluminum. It not only appears attractive, it is designed to further reinforce the outer space theme. This is because the interior of the base is hollow, thus creating a feeling of lightness, as if it was part of a zero-gravity environment. I don’t really know if such a configuration is structurally sound, but it’s said that the table’s weight-bearing capacity is up to par.
The table top is made of reinforced medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and is finished in opaque polyurethane lacquer. You can choose from table top sizes from 90 to 140 cm to accommodate the space requirements of your restaurant, café, or bistro. And I’m talking about physical space here on Earth, not outer space!
