High-tech DeLighTable by Kloss-Interactors
7th November 2007
The pace and rate at which technology progresses nowadays is simply amazing, with a wide range of products being developed both for personal and commercial use. One such technology is the DeLighTable coffee table, from London, UK-based Kloss-Interactors.
Kloss says this high-tech table was part of an investigation into the concept of reactive space and, progressing from the concept design field, it is now commercially available. I can see bar and cafe customers having a lot of fun with this. The table’s surface is sensitive to pressure; any weight placed on it creates a colorful, bright design. Thus, a beverage-filled glass sitting on it takes on certain hues; users create messages and other visual effects by “writing” on it with their fingers. It’s just sheer fun. And there’s no need to worry about glass stains or liquid stains because the surface is completely waterproof.
The DeLighTable is encased in a sturdy and elegant polished stainless steel frame, and is impressive in its sleekness and thinness: it is only twenty-five millimeters thick. It measures 900 millimeters long, 450 millimeters wide, and 300 millimeters high. The power required to run it isn’t too draining either, it only takes 12 volts. As mentioned before, it’s now available for purchase after a development period of two years. It’s a custom-made product costing GBP1200 or about US$2300, which the buyer receives four to six weeks after placing the order.
This innovative Kloss coffee table has been featured in several print publications and on bornrich.org. It truly is a novel addition to making the modern restaurant experience not only more reactive and interactive, but more fun and indeed, delightful. It would be so interesting to anticipate and to actually see more design innovations relevant to contract bar furniture and other parts of the industry in general.
