ch Engine Musical Chairs

 by: Sean Burns

News broke this week that Yahoo has purchased the Inktomi search engine for around US$235 million. This is an interesting development in the search engine industry that may impact greatly on exactly where sites get their traffic from. Another new development in the past few weeks is the change to the HotBot service but first, I’d like to look at the ramifications of the Yahoo/Inktomi deal.

Here’s a bit of background information on how the Yahoo and Inktomi search engines work. I’m sure everyone knows Yahoo but not everyone may be completely aware of how their search engine works. Yahoo is a directory. This means that it is a categorised list of sites that are listed by human editors. Getting listed in the Yahoo directory requires a yearly payment for commercial sites. You can get listed for free if you have a non-commercial site but it is very hard to do and can take months. Yahoo provides additional results when you use their search function that come from Google. In the past, Yahoo has used other search engines to provide these results (including Inktomi) but has used Google for the last couple of years. Read the rest of this entry »

Found Holes In Your Furniture?

26th June 2008

In favorable conditions, organic materials including wood and leather are vulnerable to infestation by a variety of insects. A common wooden furniture pest is the powderpost beetle. There are four types of Powderpost beetles in four families. They go through a complete metamorphosis: adults, eggs, larvae and pupae. Though adults do little damage, it is the larvae that do the major damage.

Most furniture manufacturers of repute treat the wood suitably before converting it into furniture. Wood for Amish Oak furniture and other Amish made furniture lasts for generations. Following are the four kind of powderpost beetles explained in detail:

True Powderpost Beetles: The adults are very small, flattened and reddish-brown to black in color. Larvae are white, cream colored, shaped with dark brown heads. Larvae create tunnels in the wood and become pupae. As adults they bore out through the wood, pushing a fine powdery dust out. True Powder post beetles breed in dead and dried hardwoods such as the dead branches and limbs of trees. Old items of furniture and wood antiques are especially vulnerable to attack by the beetles. Damage is usually to the starch-rich sapwood of large-pored hardwoods such as ash, hickory, oak, walnut and cherry. Their diet is starch, sugar and protein in the sapwood of hardwoods Wood that is less than 6% moisture content is seldom attacked .The life cycle averages one year to complete. This wood-boring beetle is the most widespread in the United States. Read the rest of this entry »

How To Buy Furniture

25th June 2008

Lots of times, people get choosy when they are buying a new computer, a cell phone, a refrigerator, or a flat screen TV. They try to learn everything they could about the item by reading product reviews in magazines and on the Internet; they ask friends who have tried it, and even go out to comparison shop. It?s understandable, because people want to get value for their money. But oftentimes, furniture shopping doesn?t get the same amount of research and preparation that a new appliance or electronic equipment does.

I don?t understand this. People should be giving even more effort and time into furniture shopping that they do with TVs and mobile phones and digital cameras. Quality furniture usually costs more than household appliances, after all, and they last longer too. A good dining table, for instance, will last for years with proper use and care, while your digital camera will probably become obsolete six months after you bought it. Experts in the furniture business have provided us with some helpful hints on how to shop for furniture and avoid making critical mistakes.

Ergonomic chairs what to look for

24th June 2008

An ergonomic chair is one that is going to support your back, your body, and your personal needs where you need it most. Ergonomic chairs are the type that will give your body the circulation it needs, without interfering with the size of your body, or the flow of blood in your body. Ergonomic chairs are what you really need if you are sitting still for more than three hours at a time. Sitting down in front of the video game, at your desk or if you work where you are sitting all the time it can be hard on your body, leading to aches and pains while you are working and after you get out of work for the day.

Your feet should not be dangling off your chair. If you find that your leg legs are too short for a chair, you need to adjust the height levels of your chair. The height levels of your chair should also be adjusted if you feel your legs are too long and your legs are crunched up when you sit down. A chair that will lift up and down is a good start to finding the chair that will fit your particular personal body needs. The ergonomic chair is one that will give your body support while not hurting circulation at the same time. Read the rest of this entry »

Achieving the Perfect Look of Bedroom Furniture

23rd June 2008

People usually do not spend the better part of their days in bedrooms, but it is essential to a lot of people to relax and be comfortable after a hard day’s work. Bedrooms must give that feel to you, relax you, and make you feel refreshed and ready for another day ahead. It is a common belief that the look of a room sets the mood one has when he is in it, and this is very much so with the bedroom. The bedroom should not just be comfortable; it should also fit your taste and your aesthetics. Not only that, some people believe that bedrooms are the specific rooms in their homes that represent their true self, or their personality. There might come a time when you are not satisfied with the look of your bedrooms. You sometimes feel that there is something lacking, or is not right with it. This, of course, disturbs your harmony with the environment and might sometimes be a harbinger of stress for you, and might disrupt your peace. But what if you do not have the budget to fix up the place, change the furniture, or buy some new stuff? That could be a real drag. Fortunately for you, some techniques have proven to be quite successful in changing the looks of your rooms without having to spend a lot of money. You all know the effects of color, right? Red is for passion, green is for tranquility, orange is for vitality, and so on. By changing the color scheme, you can also change the mood your bedroom sets you in. This is one simple way of creating an ambiance that you want to relax in. Giving an antiqued appearance to the furniture might also help. With the right color of paint and enough time on your hands, you can easily do this project to achieve that nice, cozy and comfortable look you are looking for. So even if some of us really do not spend that much time in bedrooms, we have to keep them as comfortable and enjoyable as we can.
